Locations and settings

Locations and settings in my opinion really make a film come alive so this is a very important subject to research into, as we need the right locations to shoot our film in. In horror films there are your usual location that can be found in typical films of that genre. I'm going to look further into some examples of these and see what would be the best for our short film.

1. Haunted house

The most typical setting for a horror film to be located in is the haunted house. This is can be found in a forest that looks abandoned and the house looks like it is falling apart. The house would need to look big and old like could be a host for ghosts and spirits that lived in the house years ago. This would be a good setting for us because we can use the abandoned house to our advantage with our film being based around ghosts and past lives. Withy collecting some pictures of haunted houses i really like the black and white one and i would suggest filming in black and white just for an idea because in my opinion it looks really vintage and gives off the right feel for our film.

2. An empty country road
I chose this because from watching the chain saw massacre films that was set in the middle of the country side in a desert almost. They are usually lonely and isolated in the films and don't have any shops or houses in them. These are good locations for horror films as theres no way of getting help from the outside world and your on your own basically if anything bad happens. The main characters are seen to be travelling in a car or motor vehicle of some sort to get somewhere like a holiday destination. I think this would be good for our film because it puts the audience in the position of the character who is lonely and needs help making the film more terrifying.

3. Holiday home

The third one i decided to do some extra research into is holidays and the feeling of being somewhere that is not familiar. I got this idea from The shining which i watched and analysed recently. I think the location of this film is very unique and clever because it is unknown to the characters and they do not know what was there before not to mention what occurred there. I think big hotels and little motels for example are very good locations and have the potential to have anything happen there compared to the home town of that character. I think it also brings more realism into it as well, because it is more believable than having it set in someones home. Plus is adds to the excitement of not knowing whats round the corner this location to me links in to the empty country road setting because it has the same qualities its just instead where someone has to stay instead of travelling along.
