Research Into A Film With Propp's Theory Of Narrative

We researched into the film, 'Die Hard,' directed by John McTiernan and starring Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman. The characters that agree with Vladimir Propp's theory are:

-The hero - John McClane
-The Villain - Hans Gruber
-Donor - The villain who McClane defeats and loots
-Helper - Argyle
-Princess - Holly McClane
-Father - The police
-Dispatcher - Christmas
-False hero - Hans Gruber, the journalist on TV and Dwayne (he is shown to be an idiot).

There are 31 functions to this film:

Preparation - Getting ready and setting up the story:

1. John McClane travels from New York to LA

2. He goes to a private party and a rule is imposed on the hero - the lifts and windows are cut out

3. The rule is broken by McClane  and Hans Gruber as they use the lifts

4. Hans tries to find something out, he tries to find out who and where Joseph Takagi is

5. Hans finds out where Takagi is

6. Hans tries to get the code off Takagi for the vault, and Hans ties to deceive the victim with questions

7. Takagi doesn't know the code, so tells Hans he'll have to kill him

Complications - Things start to get complicated and mess up how things are meant to happen:

8. Hans kills Takagi

9. McClane runs away after hearing the villain's plan

10. McClane pulls the fire alarm to call the fire brigade

Transference - Going from one place to another (movement):

11. Hero goes to the top of the building/leaves the room he was in

12. He gets attacked by villain

13. Kills the villain and gets the objects from him such as a radio and a gun

14. He uses the radio and let's the villains know he has the objects

15. McClane goes to the roof to call the police

Struggle - There is conflict:

16. Hero gets shot at by the villains but gets cornered, so goes through the vent

17. He cuts his feet

18. Villain's are shot and McClane escapes

19. Hans gets back the detonators for the building and McClane escapes

Return - The hero returns:

20. McClane returns to the bathroom (safe haven)

21. Villains catch McClane on the top floor

22. McClane hangs the villain

23. Hero shoots gun on the roof to evacuate the guests, but police think he's a terrorist

24. The reporter on the news exposes McClane's family

25. McClane has to escape from the roof

26. McClane escapes and rescues his wife

Recognition - Hero is recognised, the villain is defeated and there is a happy ending (usually):

27. McClane is recognised by Al

28. The false hero/villain is exposed

29. McClane is given a coat

30. Final villain is killed and the news reporter is punched

31. McClane is reunited with his family and drives off in a limo
