Sub-genres:
A good way of explaining a sub-genre is by using the film 'Dracula' as an example as it could be considered as a sub-genre of horror due to the fact that, even though it is categorized as being a classic horror film, it is in fact a sub-genre due to the fact it could also be classed as being under the 'vampire' genre. The general plot and story line, as well as the typical conventions of vampire themed films, (such as fangs, blood, coffins, bats etc) all show this.
Other examples of sub-genres of horror include:
-Comedy horror: such as 'Scary Movie'; a parody of a collection of 'classic' horror films.
-Action horror: such as 'Kill bill'; a bride seeks revenge on a group of criminals that betrayed her after she was left in a 4 year coma and lost her child as she was pregnant, despite the fact she used to work with them.
Themes:
Although very similar, themes in horror films are not to be confused with sub-genres. A theme is just an idea or topic that is carried out throughout a film. Some typical 'horror' themes are:
-revenge (such as 'fatal attraction')
-schizophrenia/ mental health (such as 'shutter island')
-gore (such as 'saw')
