Our film is a horror. The sub-genre is a psychological horror, which means that it relies on the audiences beliefs to function correctly. These are some examples of similar films to ours:

The others -
This film is s ghost film that aims to trick the audience. Throughout the film, the audience are led to believe that the house is haunted. But by the end of the film, it turns out that the protagonist and her family are in fact dead, and are the real ghosts. The so called 'intruders' they kept on  seeing were in fact the new house owners.
This is similar to what our film will be like. Our film will begin with someone being hanged but it is set out like a dream. Throughout the film, Agnes will experience paranormal activities such as seeing people around the house and doors opening and closing mysteriously. This can be closely linked to 'The others,' as we will base the hauntings on the film. In the end it turns out being clear that Agnes is dead. Then in the final scene it will show the new homeowners in the house and Agnes staring out of the window. This is also very similar to 'The others' final scene. The iconography used in this film mainly consists of darkness, shadows and windows.



The sixth sense -
This film is about a child who has the ability to see/make contact with the dead. In the end it turns out that the protagonist played by Bruce Willis, is actually dead, but throughout the film he does not know, and it is made out that his wife is angry with him for some reason. We can take ideas from this film and apply them to our own. For example the fact that the first scene is 'The sixth sense' is Bruce Willis being killed, but to the audience it is set out like he has recovered. In our film, Agnes will die, but it will seem like some horrible dream. Also, the end of our film will be when Agnes realises that she is dead as there will be a flashback. This is similar to 'The sixth sense,' as the protagonist suddenly realises he is dead at the end of that. The iconography of this film mainly consists of blood, small spaces and shadows.




The woman in black -
This is a ghost film that a lot of audiences are familiar with. Our aim is to target our film to similar audiences to the people who like, 'The woman in black.' This would be important for our film certificate and also for who would distribute our film. This film is similar to ours as we want to include jump scares. We can take ideas from the editing and cinematography used in this film. There are a lot of wide shots that are used in the film, that show other people on screen int he background, and also shadows/figures to create a scarier atmosphere. We can interpret these ideas in our film to have jump scares and to spook the audience. The iconography mainly used in this film is children, toys, photographs, windows, shadows and darkness. There is a lot we can learn from this film.
