The term soundtrack now most commonly refers to the music used in a movie (or television show), or to an album sold containing that music. Sometimes, the music has been recorded just for the film or album (e.g. Saturday Night Fever). Often, but not always, and depending on the type of movie, the soundtrack album will contain portions of the score, music composed for dramatic effect as the movie's plot occurs.
In horror films the music is really underestimated on how much of an effect it has on a film. Without the music in horrors films there would be no tension and feeling of atmosphere for the audience.
Incidental music used in a film or play as a background to create or enhance a particular atmosphere. Non digetic sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:
narrator’s commentary
sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect
mood music
Themes and stings. A musical sting are short bursts of music used to bump together chapters of a show and different sections together.
These all have to be considered when making a film like ours it needs to be very carefully done to have the right effect on the audience. To extend my knowledge on choosing music for our film i decided to do some wider research into the subject and find some appropriate examples:
1. Firstly i chose The Exorcist theme tune as a example of something we could use. All this soundtrack consists of is a piano playing a distinct tune however it gives off a weird atmosphere and puts the audience on the edge. This is good for me to look at because its very unique and from this quality it means as soon as its played its associated with the exorcist films. I like this and thinking of doing something similar for our film because its a ghost film too which fits in with the supernatural element of the exorcist. Its very simple music however had a big effect on the film soundtrack industry.
2. Secondly i chose a more sci-fi film that isn't really scary but could be considered scary to some parts of an audience. I chose Star wars because i've watched all the films and they all have a very distinct soundtrack to them. The reason i think these are good soundtracks is because they incorporate sound effects such as the famous scream, when someone dies or gets attacked, that can be seen in a lot of other films. I've put a link to a youtube clip of it above. Moving on to the actual theme tune i think its good how they put on the 'darth vader' song to signal him coming into a scene so the audience get excited and prepared for the dark side. I also think its good how when the good side comes on screen the music goes very high pitched and classical to show a softer side to the audience.
